Kids Classes

CrossFit Kids is a method for teaching Greg Glassman’s CrossFit to children ages 3-18. Based on the principle of Mechanics, Consistency and then Intensity, CrossFit Kids emphasizes good movement throughout childhood and adolescence. Consistently good mechanics translates to physical literacy, enhanced sports performance and fewer sports injuries for kids. Not only that, a vast body of research indicates that exercise is beneficial to cognitive function, which means consistent adherence to the program can have a positive impact on children’s academic achievement.

CrossFit Kids is meant to be BIG fun for all ages. Broad-Inclusive-General fun. Fun means we provide an active alternative to sedentary pursuits, which means less childhood obesity and all-around better health for our children. Further, the needs of second graders and high-school varsity wrestlers differ by degree and not kind; the program is scalable for any age or experience level and accounts for the varied maturation status one can find in a class full of kids. CrossFit Kids is designed to be minimalist; it is inexpensive and often requires little or no equipment, allowing a wide array of socioeconomic groups an opportunity to be physically fit and physically active throughout their lives.

CrossFit Mudtown is a licensed CrossFit Kids affiliate with properly trained coaches excited to work with your kids.

May Member Spotlight

Hank Adams

During our annual birthday celebration in April we host the Muddy Awards. A fun filled occasion where members get to vote for each other on various superlatives like “Chalk Monster” and “Best Dressed”. This year Hank won (by a landslide) the Spirit of the Gym award. It’s clear he’s a true leader in the gym. With a strong work ethic and contagious positive attitude, you can’t help but love this guy! Always willing to lend a helpful hand or provide much needed encouragement, Hank is there. He helps facilitate what our gym community is all about; integrity, trying your best and keeping a positive attitude. In the words of Hank, “I’ll see you on the other side.”

What do you do for a living? I buy power plants across the country – the majority of the plants that we purchase are powered by wind, solar or natural gas. Needless to say not the majority of wind and solar plants are in the Midwest – so I travel negotiating these purchase agreements.

How did you hear about CrossFit and what was your first workout? I learned of CrossFit in May of 2011 from my sister who was just certified and then learned that the white painted line in front of my home was the 400 meter turn around for CrossFit Rowan in Salisbury NC. My 1st workout was Murph – it was an experience to say the least, I first started doing strict pull-ups, then a green band, then multiple green and black bands and then it became dangerous for me to be suspended in the air on those multiple bands, my last 60 or so pull-ups were on the rings.

How many days do you CrossFit? What classes do you normally attend? Typically come 3-4 days a week when I’m in town. Almost always at 5pm.

Favorite CrossFit movement/workout? Favorite movement is overhead squats and favorite WOD is Nancy.

Least favorite CrossFit movement/workout? Least favorite movement is burpees and GHD sit-ups. Least favorite WOD is when Jackie puts those in the same WOD.

What motivates you/keeps you coming back to CrossFit Mudtown? CrossFit has been the one constant in our lives – over the last 10 years we’ve moved 9 times and each time we find a CrossFit that allows us to find likeminded people that we can call family. We love our Mudtown family. We also couldn’t do without the childcare that is made available. Our kids love it and we do too.

Most embarrassing/funniest gym moment? See Murph story above.

Favorite thing about Birmingham? How can you not love the food in Birmingham. I also like the fact that I can leave my house 1 hr before the flight departs from BHM….can’t do that in many places.

What accomplishment are you most proud of (outside and inside of the gym)? Completed 2 GoRuck challenges. Married up and have 2 awesome kids.

What is your favorite meal? I love spaghetti.

What are some of your interests outside of CrossFit? I enjoy golf and hunting.

What is one goal that you are currently working on? I would like to do muscle-up that resembles a gymnastics movement – today those look pretty awful.

Do you have a hidden talent? I probably cook the best spaghetti and chili in Jefferson County.

Tell us a fun/interesting fact not many people know about you. I’m the oldest of 8 kids, bought 9 homes in the last 10 years and Ashley and I eloped to Jamaica without inviting anyone.
